Coral Disease Training Expands in American Samoa. The National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa completed specialized training for the Coral Reef Advisory Group on coral disease detection and response protocols, building local capacity to monitor and respond to potential disease outbreaks. The initiative follows the standardized methodology developed by the U.S. Geological Survey's National Wildlife Health Center, as coral diseases have devastated reefs in other regions like the Western Atlantic. England’s record heatwave is now “100 times more likely” because of climate change. A sweltering June weekend saw temperatures climb above 32 °C in southeast England, a heatwave that scientists say would have been virtually impossible without human-induced warming. Imperial College researchers reveal this spike is now 100 times more likely than in pre‑industrial eras. Behind it: hotter average June temps (2-4 °C higher), prolonged dry spells, and heightened health risks; especially among the elderly and chronically ill. The NHS is bracing for heat‑related strain, and wildfire risks loom after an unusually arid spring. The verdict? U.K. adaptation fails to match the escalating threat. [Read more]
Judicial rebuke: EPA’s axing of $600M environmental‑justice grants deemed unlawful. In a landmark decision, a Maryland federal court rebuked the EPA for illegally canceling $600 million intended for low-income and marginalized communities under the Inflation Reduction Act. Judge Adam Abelson ruled the EPA failed to justify its abrupt halt of the Thriving Communities Grant program, stripping local partners of critical funds aimed at pollution remediation and public health. The decision forces the agency to reassess and potentially reinstate community-focused environmental justice efforts. [Read more]
