OCEAN NEWS ‒ REPORTS ‒ ANNOUNCEMENTS
Orcas Are Trying to Make Friends (With Fish Gifts). Wild killer whales across four continents have been documented offering fish to humans in an unprecedented display of cross-species social behavior. Over 34 recorded instances spanning two decades reveal orcas deliberately approaching humans, dropping prey, and waiting expectantly for responses, sometimes trying multiple times when initially rebuffed. This remarkable behavior suggests these apex predators may be extending their natural food-sharing rituals to build relationships with humans, offering profound insights into cetacean intelligence and social cognition. Citizen Scientists Just Mapped 315 Million Ocean Depths. NOAA has achieved a historic milestone by processing the complete body of crowdsourced bathymetric data from U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coasts: over 315 million individual depth observations contributed by private vessels. This breakthrough for the Seabed 2030 Project represents the first-ever comprehensive processing of citizen science ocean floor data, revealing previously unmapped seafloor areas and changes. The achievement demonstrates how ordinary boaters are becoming critical partners in the ambitious goal to map 100% of Earth's ocean floor by 2030. [Read more]
Killer Whales Invented Kelp Spa Treatments. Southern resident killer whales have been caught crafting tools from kelp and using them for cooperative grooming, the first documented case of marine mammals making tools for mutual care. Drone footage captured whales breaking off bull kelp pieces and rolling the seaweed between their bodies in synchronized "allokelping" movements to remove dead skin and parasites. With three-quarters of a 25-whale pod participating over 12 days, this behavior represents a groundbreaking expansion of our understanding of cetacean intelligence and social bonding. [Read more]
Ocean Protection Gets Biggest Boost in Years. The third UN Ocean Conference triggered the largest wave of marine protection commitments in recent history, with 18 countries ratifying the High Seas Treaty and bringing global ratifications to 49: just 11 short of the 60 needed for enforcement. French Polynesia announced over 1 million km² of new marine protected areas, while a new political coalition launched to achieve 30% ocean protection by 2030. Despite €10 billion in pledges, the conference highlighted a stark reality: only 2.7% of oceans are effectively protected from destructive activities. [Read more]

California’s MPA Network Earns Historic IUCN Green List Status. California just scored a global first. The state’s marine protected area network is now on the IUCN Green List, the first entire ecosystem network to reach that benchmark. A new five-year Work Plan prioritises tribal partnerships, tougher enforcement and climate-smart monitoring to keep 16 percent of state waters thriving, a model hailed for export worldwide by experts. Google’s Carbon Math Melts Under New Scrutiny. Google’s climate math just got torched. A watchdog analysis finds the tech giant’s true carbon footprint has soared 65 percent since 2019 and a staggering 1,515 percent since 2010, far higher than company claims. Critics warn its AI arms race is blowing the 2030 net zero promise, draining water and power, and demand tougher disclosure rules. [Read more]
Interior Department Slashes NEPA Rules, Sparking Legal Alarm. US Interior quietly rewrites National Environmental Policy Act regulations. The interim final rule, effective July 3, strips major safeguards and moves the rest into a handbook outside the Code of Federal Regulations. Environmental lawyers say the move weakens project reviews for pipelines and mines; public comments run to August 4 and legal fights are already brewing.
